Masculinity: Who are our heroes?
Week 2 folder: “Cultural Studies, Multiculturalism, and Media Culture.” Sections from Jean Shinoda Bolen’s Gods in Every Man and Julia Wood’s Gendered Lives (on masculine stereotypes in the work place.)
Journal 1: Discuss an example of one your own male heroes from the mass media.  Describe characteristics of the male gods and stereotypes in his character. Take three of the ways that Cultural Studies analyzes cultural artifacts to explain how you might deconstruct your hero’s image.

Week 1



The distinction between sex and gender differentiates sex, the biological makeup of an individual's reproductive anatomy or secondary sex characteristics, from gender, an individual's lifestyle (often culturally learned) or personal identification of one's own gender (gender identity)This distinction is not universal. In ordinary speech, sex and gender are often used interchangeable. Some dictionaries and academic disciplines give them different definitions while others do not.

Let's take a look at this article on gender flipping.

Intro to course and Sex vs. Gender
Week 1 on Google Drive: Intro, Feminist Criticism, and short article on gender flipping. For Tuesday write about the following:
(1) Pretend to be an anthropologist from Mars who is analyzing an artifact in order to discern how gender and sexuality are defined this culture; (2) Use the technique of gender flipping with the artifact and talk about what is shows you about the construction of gender.
